Schools in Porto for international families: public school enrollment and international schools in 2026

School is compulsory in Portugal from age 6 to 18, and public school is free within compulsory education. Foreign children enroll through the Portal das Matrículas or at the office of the school in their home area, and a residence permit is not a precondition in the official sources we checked. Children who do not speak Portuguese can take Portuguese as a non-native language (PLNM) instead of the regular Portuguese class. In Porto, five international schools confirm their curriculum and address on their own websites: British/Cambridge, IB, French and German options, all inside the city of Porto.

This guide covers schools. For the visa that brings the family here, see D7 vs D8 visa; for US paperwork, Americans moving to Portugal; for housing costs, Porto vs Lisbon cost of living.

How Portuguese public schooling works

The gov.pt guide for migrants sets out the levels:

  • Pre-school (educação pré-escolar), optional, from age 3 to 6
  • Basic education, 1st cycle: years 1 to 4
  • Basic education, 2nd cycle: years 5 and 6
  • Basic education, 3rd cycle: years 7 to 9
  • Secondary education: years 10 to 12

Children start year 1 in the year they turn 6, if they turn 6 by September 15. Attendance at basic and secondary level is compulsory between ages 6 and 18. Under Law 85/2009, compulsory schooling ends when the student obtains the secondary diploma or turns 18.

The same law says that within compulsory schooling, education is “universal e gratuito” (universal and free). Free covers fees and charges for enrollment, attendance and certification. The parent's duty is to enroll the child in a public school, a private or cooperative school, or another institution recognized by the authorities. So the duty can also be met at a private international school recognized by the Portuguese authorities.

Enrolling a foreign child

You can enroll online in the Portal das Matrículas or in person at the office (secretaria) of the school in the child's home area. The portal lists what the parent needs: your ID document, the child's ID document, a digital photo of the child, your tax number (NIF) and the child's, and the child's social security number (NISS) if you want school social support (Ação Social Escolar). Getting a NIF for each child early saves time; our guide to buying property as a foreigner explains the NIF step.

Enrollment windows for the 2026/2027 school year, as published on the portal:

YearWindow
Pre-school and year 1April 22 to June 1
Years 6 to 9 and year 11June 16 to June 29
Years 2 to 5July 1 to July 13
Years 10 and 12July 15 to July 24

These windows have closed. The gov.pt service page gives July 15 to 22 for years 10 and 12, so check the portal itself when the 2027/2028 dates come out. Families who arrive during the school year enroll at the school office, as gov.pt explains. Logging in to the Portal das Matrículas needs a Citizen Card (Cartão de Cidadão), the Chave Móvel Digital or Portal das Finanças credentials, so newly arrived parents usually enroll in person. Decree-Law 7/2025, in article 4(4), mentions mid-year enrollment as one case for placing a child one year below, with the parent's written agreement. For years 10 to 12, gov.pt says enrollment is only completed once equivalence is granted.

Without a residence permit. gov.pt states that everyone has the right to education. Decree-Law 7/2025 lets schools place pupils of any nationality in basic education, and, as an exception, pupils who have no documents. If a child is in Portugal irregularly, for example after a visa expired, the parents can ask AIMA for a foreign minor registration. AIMA then issues a credential to present at health centers and school groupings for access to health and education.

Foreign grades: placement and equivalence

For years 1 to 9, Decree-Law 7/2025, published in February 2025, added a simpler placement (posicionamento) without formal equivalence; equivalence under Decree-Law 227/2005 remains available. The school director decides the year, based on years completed abroad, the child's age and other records. Where documents are missing, the school assesses Portuguese, a foreign language, and math and science. Schools can waive legalization or translation of documents for placement. A child can be placed one year below, with the parent's written agreement. Placement does not certify that the child completed year 9.

For secondary school (years 10 to 12), equivalence under Decree-Law 227/2005 still applies. It is requested at the school where the student enrolls. gov.pt lists the documents: the request form, an official school certificate authenticated by a consulate or with a Hague apostille, subjects and final grades with the grading scale for secondary records, and an official Portuguese translation. Collect and apostille these before you move.

Portuguese as a non-native language (PLNM)

Newly arrived students whose mother tongue is not Portuguese, or who were not schooled in Portuguese, can take PLNM in place of the Portuguese subject. Each student sits a language test, and the school decides access and support from the result. The levels are beginner (A1/A2), intermediate (B1) and advanced (B2/C1).

International schools in the Porto area

We list only schools whose curriculum and address we confirmed on the school's own website on October 29, 2026. All five have Porto addresses. We did not find an official Ministry of Education list of foreign-curriculum schools, and we give no fees or rankings: fee tables change each year, so read them on each school's site.

Urbanis has no commercial partnership with any of these schools. Urbanis also runs the Global Parents Business Community, a business network for parents of CJD International School families.

Two details from the schools' own pages. The Deutsche Schule Porto requires no German for kindergarten, but its primary and secondary school admit only pupils whose mother tongue is German or who attended a German school before, after an entrance test. Oporto British School is the only Porto-area school on the IB's own list of IB World Schools in Portugal. We did not find an American-curriculum school in the Porto area that we could verify.

Choosing where to live

For a public school, your address decides the school area, so pick the home and the school together. The portal's school network search (Rede Escolar) shows the schools for an address.

For an international school, the commute matters more. All five schools above are in the city of Porto. Families also look at the neighboring municipalities: Matosinhos on the coast north-west of Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro River to the south, and Maia to the north. Test the school run at peak hours before you sign a lease.

A practical timeline

  1. Well before the move: shortlist schools and contact admissions. Ask about places, entry tests and the language level expected.
  2. Before you fly: collect birth certificates, school reports and secondary transcripts, with apostille and certified translation.
  3. First weeks in Porto: get a NIF for each child, sign the lease, then enroll through the portal or at the school office.
  4. After enrollment: placement or equivalence, the PLNM test and, if needed, Ação Social Escolar.
  5. From April each year: watch the portal for the next year's enrollment windows.
